Privacy and decentralized storage
Read this page before installing Proofmode or submitting media. It is the canonical list of what the Public submission map does and does not display, and the full guidance on identifiable people and sensitive content.
What is not public
The Public submission map does not display:
- Participant names
- Phone numbers
- Email addresses
- Other direct personal details collected for authentication
What may be public
The Public submission map may display:
- The full Wallet address associated with the Attestation
- The Capture coordinates recorded by Proofmode
- Raw Proofset metadata used in the Public submission map details pane
- Media for Approved Submissions, shown as Observations
- Submission and review status
This is pseudonymous public participation, not absolute anonymity. A Wallet address is a persistent, pseudonymous public identifier. It is not a participant’s name, but it may link multiple Submissions made with the same Wallet address.
Precise Capture coordinates
Privacy
Precise Capture coordinates are not generalized and may be public. When a Submission is eligible for Public submission map display, it is shown at the coordinates recorded at Capture time. Precision depends on the device’s GPS accuracy at that time.
Submissions outside the campus boundary are filtered from Public submission map display by the event’s backend geospatial logic.
Identifiable people and sensitive content
Avoid photographing identifiable people, children, private situations, identification documents, license plates, or other sensitive information. Participants are responsible for considering the consequences of submitting media to a decentralized network.
Every Submission is reviewed before its media is displayed publicly.
Decentralized storage
Publication is irreversible
On-chain Attestations are intended to remain indefinitely. An on-chain Attestation cannot be removed by unpinning associated media or hiding a Submission from the Public submission map.
Event media is stored on IPFS. The organizer plans to pin media on its IPFS node for at least two to three months after the event ends. After organizer pinning ends, continued retrieval is not guaranteed unless other IPFS nodes retain the content. Unpinning media from the organizer’s node does not guarantee that copies held elsewhere have been removed.
Requesting media removal
To request removal of media from the organizer-controlled IPFS node and the Public submission map, contact the event team through Help.
Publication is irreversible
If the request is approved, the team unpins the media from the organizer’s IPFS node and blacklists the Attestation from the Public submission map, so the media is not displayed there. The on-chain Attestation remains. Copies of the media retained by other IPFS nodes may remain accessible, and the event team cannot guarantee network-wide deletion.
